[WWE News] The Rock Debuts New WWE Championship on ‘Raw’

After eight long years, the Spinner Belt is no more as champion The Rock debuted a brand-new belt to go along with his brand-new title reign (a month after he won it but still). The early response on Twitter was overwhelmingly negative, including yours truly, but now that I’ve had time to digest it I have made peace with it. The lack of a nameplate is sad and the black leather background will take some getting used to, but it looks like a proper championship again instead of a vanity belt that has overstayed its welcome. It’s a step in the right direction and I’m already 100% less embarrassed by it as a fan.

[WWE News] Wrestlemania XXX Date and Location Officially Announced

wm30 logo

In a press conference held earlier in the day WWE officially announced that the 30th edition of its flagship event Wrestlemania will take place on April 7, 2014 from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Joining Mayor Mitch Landrieu for the big announcement were Chairman Vince McMahonJohn Cena, Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, The Rock, Alberto Del Rio, The Big Show, Mark Henry, The Great Khali, Brodus ClayThe Funkadactyls, and Layla. To watch the entire conference, click the link provided earlier in the article.

Being that New Orleans has long been rumored to be the location this probably doesn’t come as much of a shock to anyone who bfrequents the bevy of news sites on the internet. But it’s still nice to finally have it be official. And much respect to the WWE for keeping the Roman numerals for the official logo; it’s going to be unfortunate when this time next year everyone is going to make the “LOL TRIPLE X MEANS PORN” joke. Be prepared.

[WWE News] ‘Elimination Chamber’ 2013 Preview; Lineup + Predictions

ec2013

The march to Wrestlemania 29 makes a pit stop in New Orleans this Sunday as WWE presents Elimination Chamber. With a big main event and a star-studded Elimination Chamber match it’s definitely looking more like a must-buy than most non-big four WWE PPV’s.

[WWE News] Bruno Sammartino to Be the Fourth Inductee in the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame

bruno sammartino

It is now safe to go ice skating in Hell as WWE announced today that Bruno Sammartino is the 4th member of the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame Class. In the annals of WWE history, Sammartino is the third most important wrestler to ever work for the company, behind Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin. Sammartino became the face of the WWE, then known as the WWWF, defeating Buddy Rogers to become World Champion in 1963 and holding it for eight years before losing it to Ivan Koloff. During that time he sold out Madison Square Garden more times than anyone can count, becoming the hero for the scores of Italian immigrants that made their home in New York City (and the surrounding areas). Sammartino would win the gold once again in the 70’s and hold it a few more years before dropping it to “Superstar” Billy Graham in 1977. Sammartino would continue to be a big part of the WWE as the years went on, feuding with Larry Zbyszko and eventually even returning to the ring part-time in the 1980’s during the company’s national expansion.

With such a storied and impactful career, it seemed almost ridiculous for Sammartino not to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame but a fallout between Sammartino and the WWE has prevented this from coming to fruition for the past few years. Sammartino has been highly critical of the WWE product and where it brought wrestling, and distanced himself from anything WWE-related instead making appearances at independent wrestling promotions and conventions (most notably in Ring of Honor). But after a talk with Triple H and a chance to watch the current-day product, Sammartino is finally comfortable enough to accept the Hall of Fame induction. And considering it’s being held in the same building he helped make a wrestling mecca in the 60’s and 70’s, it’s almost too damn perfect.

The 2013 WWE Hall of Fame takes place at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 6th the night before Wrestlemania 29. Joining Sammartino thus far in the 2013 class are Mick Foley, Bob Backlund, and Trish Stratus.

[WWE News] NXT Star Bo Dallas Earns Spot in Tomorrow’s Royal Rumble Match

bo dallas

Bo Dallas, one of the many superstars populating WWE’s developmental territory NXT, will make history tomorrow as the first NXT superstar to be entered into the “Royal Rumble” match. He earned the spot by winning an eight-man tournament at the Royal Rumble FanFest currently going on in Phoenix, AZ. He defeated Luke Harper, Conor O’Brian, and Leo Kruger en route to victory. Other participants in the tournament included Adrian Neville, Oliver Grey, Corey Graves, and Xavier Woods. Dallas is the son of wrestling legend Mike Rotunda, perhaps better known to WWE fans as I.R.S.

For the full story on Dallas’ win, head over to WWE.com.

[WWE News] Take-Two Interactive Buying WWE Game License from THQ

take-two-interactive-logo1 (Small)

THQ, one of the longstanding game publishers of the past few decades, has officially gone belly-up. The company has auctioned off its assets to other game publishers and as it stands is no more. It’s a sad day for gamers and my heart goes out to the THQ employees affected by this.

With THQ now gone it’s time for the WWE games license to find a new home and according to IGN Take-Two Interactive is stepping up to the plate to acquire it. Take-Two is a subsidiary of 2K Games and is responsible for developing the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise for Rockstar as well as the NBA2K series. In short they’re a powerhouse publisher and should the sale end up final, it’s still not totally official yet, it puts WWE in tremendous hands and gives them a very promising future.

It’s truly an end of an era for WWE games; THQ has been behind them all since the days of the N64 and we’ve all grown accustomed to seeing their logo as we boot the game up. With Take-Two stepping in, sky’s the limit on the changes they’ll make and how much the new games will differ from the ones we know and love. I, for one, can’t wait. WWE ’13 was a giant mountain of disappointment to me and I was all but ready to never buy another wrestling game until a major shakeup occurred. I would consider this a major shakeup.

So as we enter a new era in the realm of WWE video games, I will leave you with this parting thought: the last two companies to make mainstream wrestling video games (Midway and THQ) both went belly-up. Interesting how that is.

[WWE News] Trent Barreta and Skylar Moon Released; Barreta Already Booked for April Indy Date

trent-barreta

PWTorch reports that Trent Barreta and developmental women’s wrestler Skylar Moon have both been released from their contracts. Barreta has been working mainly on NXT shows since returning from injury last year, while Moon…I assume has been doing the same thing. Truth be told I’ve never actually seen her wrestle, be it as Moon on WWE programming or as Buggy Nova on the independent scene. Still it sucks when WWE loses another Diva; they barely have a division at this point and need all the women they can get.

Those of you worried for Barreta’s future shouldn’t fret as he’s already keeping himself busy. The same article that reported the releases also let loose that Pro Wrestling Syndicate has signed Barreta for the first night of “PWS Super Card”, scheduled for Wrestlemania 29 weekend.

No word on any more WWE releases but I’ll let you know when I know.

[WWE News] Mick Foley is the First Member of the 2013 Hall of Fame Class

WWE has announced Mick Foley as the first 2013 inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame. Arguably the third biggest star of The Attitude Era behind Steve Austin and The Rock, Foley was a wrestler like no other, willing to take immeasurable amounts of abuse for the sake of putting on a memorable match or creating memorable moments. Although he was already well-known as Cactus Jack from his WCW, ECW, and Japan stints, Foley became immortalized in 1998 when, wrestling as Mankind, he was thrown off the top of the Hell in a Cell and through a table by The Undertaker at the King of the Ring PPV. This moment, as well as the match itself, has become stuff of legend and one of the “go to” moments whenever WWE wants to discuss that part of their history. But Foley just wasn’t all barbed wire and tables; he also turned out to be quite the prolific writer, penning his first memoir Have a Nice Day! in the late 90’s which became a New York Times Bestseller and proved that wrestling fans do in fact read once in awhile. He has written many books since then, some autobiographical and others fictional, and is now attempting to launch a stand-up comedy career.

To sum it up Foley is a perfect person to induct into the WWE Hall of Fame; he’s had an indelible impact on the generation who watched him defy death on an almost-weekly basis (for better or worse, depending on who you ask) and is one of the most beloved stars of “The Attitude Era”. Foley has had a tremendous career and helped bring the WWE to new heights in popularity so it’s no surprise that he’s getting the nod. And good god does he deserve it.

The 2013 Hall of Fame ceremony will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY on April 6th, the day before Wrestlemania 29 takes place at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
