[WWE News] El Generico Signs with Company

El Generico

For the past few months, rumors have floated around that indie star El Generico was on his way to the WWE. Well it appears that these rumors are indeed true. As first reported by PWPonderings, “The Generic Luchador” is making his way to Stamford, CT. According to PWInsider, who confirmed the story with their sources, one of the reasons the WWE is so interested in Generico is because of his ability to speak many different languages; it is believed that this could help the wrestling juggernaut in international markets. Also he’s insanely popular on the indie scene and damn good in the ring, but that’s a moot point apparently. No word on if the Generico gimmick is going with the man, but here’s hoping. Having a crowd of 20,000 singing along to “Ole!” would be amazing on so many levels.

Generico’s last big indy date was at last month’s Final Battle where he came up short in his bid to defeat ROH World Champion Kevin Steen. While initially pulled from PWG’s upcoming “DDT” tag tournament, it appears that he will be there in some form or another and it may be his last indie date for quite some time.

While not surprising news, this is definitely big time stuff. Indie fans already know how great Generico is, and the potential is there to make a big splash in the WWE. But, as always, we’ll have to wait and see.

[ROH News] Steen/Generico Ladder War IV to Headline ‘Final Battle 2012’

I was going to wait for the show to actually air, but since ROH just spoiled it via press release (and a post on their official site) I guess I’ll just suck it up and post it now. During the final TV tapings of 2012 last week, new ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness announced the main event for the company’s final iPPV of the year Final Battle. The main event will pit Kevin Steen against his former partner turned hated rival El Generico for the ROH World Heavyweight Title…in a “Ladder War”. This is the sort of match that both men are very familiar in, having battled in 75% of them back when they were tag team partners, and adding this stipulation to their match at Final Battleis insanely poetic. Those paying attention to ROH are undoubtedly not surprised at Generico making his return to ROH to face his former partner as their last iPPV, Glory by Honor XI,ended with Steen ominously being delivered a Generico mask. Generico’s last match for ROH happened back at Showdown in the Sun earlier this year, a losing effort against Steen in a Last Man Standing match.

Speaking as merely a casual ROH fan (yes they exist), the Steen/Generico main event just sold me on getting the iPPV. I love both men’s work and their blood feud is one of the few standout storylines the company has had in the past few years. This is going to be a bloodbath and I can’t f*cking wait.

Final Battle 2012 comes at you live from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on December 16, 2012. Purchase your tickets here.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s annual tournament “Battle of Los Angeles” begins tonight at the American Legion in Resada, California. Here is the current match lineup for the first night of the tournament, known as “Stage 1”:

  • El Generico Vs. Adam Cole
  • Davey Richards Vs. Michael Elgin
  • Ricochet Vs. Kevin Steen
  • Eddie Edwards Vs. Kyle O’Reilly

The winners will advance to “Stage 2” tomorrow which will be held at the same location and will also feature non-tournament matches. PWG is one of the most beloved independent promotions in the country and judging by how excellent this lineup looks, I’m starting to understand why (my previous experience with PWG came from watching highlight videos/matches of The Human Tornado many moons ago). I will be posting results later on, so check back to the site to see who won.
