[WWE News] ‘Night of Champions 2012’: Lineup + Predictions
Tonight, WWE presents Night of Champions live from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Click “read more” to see the final (announced) lineup plus my predictions!
Main Event: CM Punk (c) Vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship
This is a feud that was done to death last year, but thanks to the excellent work of Punk and Cena (and Paul Heyman) it has some life to it. I expect another really good match between the two but in the end Punk should have his hand raised in order to keep the feud going and, more importantly, continue the lead in to what I assume will be his match against The Rock at Royal Rumble. Cena will survive the loss; he always does.
- Prediction: CM Punk retains (possibly by screwy means)
Sheamus (c) Vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship
WWE has tried to put some fire back into the long-running Sheamus/Del Rio feud by banning the Brogue Kick but let’s face it: this feud is over and done with. It’s time for Sheamus to move on and although Del Rio has regained some of the heat he lost over the year, he’s simply not the man who should dethrone Sheamus for the belt. The only other way I could see this match ending would be Sheamus using the Brogue Kick and getting DQ’ed, but that would just extend this feud even longer and no one wants that (except maybe Del Rio).
- Prediction: Sheamus retains
The Miz (c) Vs. Cody Rhodes Vs. Sin Cara Vs. Rey Mysterio for the WWE Intercontinental Title
This is an interesting match-up and I expect this one to be one of the best matches of the night (Cena/Punk will take the honors no matter what). Miz has come up short in a lot of matches since becoming champion but has won when it counted (see his match against Mysterio at Summerslam) so I’m hoping the result is the same here. But I won’t be disappointed if Rhodes sneaks his way to the championship.
- Prediction: The Miz retains
R-Truth/Kofi Kingston (c) Vs. Daniel Bryan/Kane for the WWE Tag Team Titles
The storyline between Daniel Bryan and Kane has been one of the more entertaining on WWE television and the events dictate that this mish mash team will become the new Tag Team champions to “further their therapy” with one another. While I normally balk at the idea of having a just put together team win the belts, I’ll make an exception here because Bryan/Kane are just so fun together and being tag champs could lead to some really fun situations/matches. The only reason I wouldn’t want to see it is because that means Truth/Kingston will end up getting lost in the shuffle once again.
- Prediction: Bryan/Kane become new Tag Team Champions
Antonio Cesaro (c) Vs. Winner of Pre-Show Battle Royal for the WWE United States Title
No matter who wins, I expect Cesaro to retain since he just got started as U.S. Champion. However I have a sinking feeling Santino Marella is going to be the one to face him due to his stupid Cobra storyline with Aksana. I hope I’m wrong; I want to see a match that actually showcases Cesaro’s immense talent for once.
- Prediction: Antonio Cesaro retains
Layla (c) Vs. Kaitlyn for the WWE Divas Championship
This match has absolutely no build whatsoever and frankly Layla does nothing for me as Divas Champion. Here are the two ways this could go down: Eve Torres could come out and “accidentally” cost Kaitlyn the match to further their feud or Torres costs Layla the title so she can get a shot herself due to said feud. I’m hoping for the latter but the former is also possible.
- Prediction: Kaitlyn becomes the champion
Randy Orton Vs. Dolph Ziggler
Orton has been getting the upper hand on Ziggler on TV over the past few weeks, which all but guarantees that Ziggler will get the nod tonight at the PPV. At least that’s what I’m hoping since he’s a Money in the Bank winner and needs to be built up for the future main event slot. Orton is the man to put him over too; although he has done very little since returning, he’s still a big star in the eyes of the WWE fans so he can help elevate Ziggler to new heights. Plus Orton has to leave in a few weeks anyway to start shooting the 12 Rounds sequel so this is a good opportunity for the WWE to make Ziggler look important.
- Prediction: Dolph Ziggler gets the win and possibly puts Orton “out of action”
YouTube Pre-Show: Battle Royal for a Shot at Cesaro’s U.S. Title on the PPV
I have no idea how this will play out whatsoever. While on one hand I want to see Cesaro get a competitive match, it could easily be Santino Marella again. I’m not going to call this one because I simply don’t know and don’t watch Smackdown enough to make a truly educated guess.
- Prediction: I have no idea (Santino probably)
And that’s your lineup for Night of Champions. I will not be covering the event live, but I will post results after the PPV is finished. The show starts at 8pm/7pm Central and you can order it either on PPV or on WWE.com.
