[TV Quick Review] WWE Superstars – 8/23/2012

Quick Reviews work a little bit differently than recaps; instead of going blow and by blow, I’ll be giving a basic overview of the show (results, match grades, etc.) and an overall score. It’s like a “Reader’s Digest” version of what I normally do.

Commentators: Scott Sanford/Matt Striker

Damien Sandow makes his way to the ring as Scott Stanford and Matt Striker welcome the home audience. Josh Matthews is out due to an attack by Kane at Summerslam.

Sandow gets on the mic and calls the fans ignorant, but he will cure them since it is his duty. “You’re welcome”. Excellent. I love this guy. Yoshi Tatsu makes his way out next, reminding viewers at home that he is indeed still on the roster.

Match #1: Damien Sandow pinned Yoshi Tatsu (4:24)

  • A showcase match for Sandow, who is on the rise in the WWE, and a decent one at that. Tatsu did manage to get some good offense in as well, which Sandow sold beautifully. All in all not too bad of a match that lacks a story or purpose other than to continue to get Sandow over. Sandow Sandow Sandow. (C+)

Main event announced for this week’s show: Justin Gabriel will take on Cody Rhodes.

Summerslam Recap Slideshow: Triple H/Brock Lesnar. Striker reminds everyone that Trips suffered a “broken arm” at the conclusion of the match.

Raw Recap: Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman’s opening monologue gloating about their victory, Shawn Michaels‘ heartfelt (read: lame) monologue “thanking” Trips for a great career.

Superstar TOUT: Brock Lesnar quits the WWE (as seen on Raw)

Drew McIntyre makes his way out for the next match. He has a badass TitanTron video. McIntyre is wearing a cast due to a fractured left hand. Striker says the winner of the next match could be in line for a championship match (right) then goes into an awkward plug for the September PPV Night of Champions. Alex Riley comes out next. This is a rematch from last week’s Superstars.

Match #2: Alex Riley pinned Drew McIntyre (3:56)

  • I was sad to see that match end so quick as both men were working really well together (minus an awkward dropkick botch by Riley). I wouldn’t be surprised if they faced again next week although they don’t really need a rubber match. (C+)

Video Package: The Smackdown Asian tour two weeks ago.

Superstars Hype: Gabriel/Rhodes main event.

Raw Recap: CM Punk and John Cena‘s confrontation from the end of last Monday’s Raw followed by Punk kicking Jerry Lawler in the back of the head.

Justin Gabriel makes his way out to the ring for the main event. Stanford informs of his loss to Rhodes two weeks ago on Superstars and how Gabriel is looking to redeem himself. The match is next!

We’re back at Gabriel is in the ring. Out comes his opponent Cody Rhodes. Striker says Rhodes tried to hit on Gabriel’s girl last Monday so their rivalry is now personal because it’s about “ego” (cute, but I’m not buying it).

Main Event: Cody Rhodes pinned Justin Gabriel (11:28)

  • Gabriel/Rhodes put on a great main event for Superstars and a match that was worthy of being on either Raw or Smackdown. Very impressive. Good way to end this show as well. (B)

Overall Show Grade: C+

  • Favorite Match: Justin Gabriel/Cody Rhodes
  • Least Favorite Match: Alex Riley/Drew McIntyre

WWE Superstars is put online every Thursday at 4PM(3PM central) on WWE.com.
